SIMPLE MINDED 8-TRACK MIX TAPE – 4th Quarter 2017

After some delay, here is the Simple Minded 8-Track Mix Tape. So here's our top musical picks for the 4th quarter of 2017 - July, August and September. We'll try to put up our full Top 100 Songs list for 2017. Yes, we are aware we're a couple of months behind schedule.

FOURTH QUARTER 2017 – October, November & December

TRACK 1 – “Turbo” by Cosmo from the album Cosmotronic

PRODUCT OF:  Ivrea, Italy

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It’s the perfect mix of Euro Pop and avant-garde electronic beats.  And you got to love a song that incorporates a long, hard laugh into the chorus.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Italian fashion models in post apocalyptic, Middle Eastern haute couture being led by Cosmo in an epic dance fight against a fascist army in the ruins of an Italian city.

TRACK 2 – “It’s A Shame” by First Aid Kit from the album Ruins

PRODUCT OF:  Stockholm, Sweden

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It’s the closest thing to real country music that you can get ……. and it’s made all the way in Sweden.  Let us pray the impressive dueling voices of First Aid Kit never go to Nashville and get caught in the pop-country swamp.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Parallel lives with different results all brought to life through the magic of SPLIT-SCREEN.

TRACK 3 – “Jupiter” by Benjamin Clementine from the album I Tell A Fly

PRODUCT OF:  London, England

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  Benjamin Clementine is an enormously talented and unique voice that transcends simple pop music and takes you to a realm that is something wholly original.  It’s possible that he is channeling intergalactic alien vibes when singing this song and might actually be familiar with Jupiter in person.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Benjamin Clementine, who might be an alien in disguise, walking around the desert and small towns with an American flag.  Or is he walking on a future space colony on one of Jupiter’s moons established by the American government?

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  Jupiter is the largest of the nine classic planets in the Solar System.  Yeah, we went there.  We’re counting Pluto as a planet.  Fuck you if you don’t like it.  Let me get this straight, so what astronomers are saying is that a dwarf planet is not really a planet which would mean that a dwarf human is not really a human?  Prejudiced bastards.

TRACK 4 – “Columbo” by Wanda from the album Niente

PRODUCT OF:  Vienna, Austria

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It is a wonderful continuation of the fresh alt rock sound found on Wanda’s last album, Bussi.  The Austrian band is back with a crisper vibe that is highlighted in “Columbo” and indicates an evolution to a more vibrant alternative pop rock dimension.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A relationship goes through its ups and downs as an Austrian rocker Cupid dances in an open pit mine.  Cupid doesn’t really help out in this relationship.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  Columbo is a lovable and quirky fictional detective made famous by Peter Falk while Colombo is the lovable and quirky commercial capital of Sri Lanka that Peter Falk probably never visited.

TRACK 5 – “Machismo Is Dead” by Divine Kegel from the album La Solidaridad I

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It has a very cool early 1990s punk rock vibe that makes you want to pogo and put a safety pin through your nose.  The hard driving guitars sort of make it sound like early Sugar Ray’s punk sound before they decided that pop rock was the way to go.  Sugar Ray’s musical evolution is still the most confusing thing my young ears witnessed when I was but a wee child.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Fast cars, fast music and even faster women gyrating on a racetrack.  No video exists for this song but if doesn’t have bikini girls on top of muscle cars then they shouldn’t even bother making a video.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  A kegel exercise involves the repetitive contraction of the pelvic muscles in order to control incontinence and to gain super sexual powers.  A divine kegel is when you do this exercise at church.

TRACK 6 – “Perdonami” by Salmo

PRODUCT OF:  Olbia, Italy

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  Salmo is the king of Italian rap and every time he steps up to the mic you know it’s going to be good.  The song is another intense, but poetic, rap clinic that Salmo lays down with style.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  The skeleton form of Salmo wandering around a city at night.  Don’t worry, he’s not a scary skeleton and he just wants to show off his rap skills to random people.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  The hit movie Coco would have been even better if Salmo had a cameo as a rapping Italian skeleton.

TRACK 7 – “Adem” by Yevgueni from the album Tijd Is Alles

PRODUCT OF:  Belgium

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It’s a beautiful ballad with uncharacteristic heavy guitar work that is normally not heard in pop ballads.  It’s hauntingly serene but still has a hopeful edge to it.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A reverse ocean rescue where children arrive from the ocean to help adults who have somehow been partially buried in the beach.  How did people get partially buried on the beach?  How did children get such easy access to so many shovels?  These questions may never be answered.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  Adem is the cool new way to spell Adam.

TRACK 8 – “Holiday” by Medvedi from the album Upside Down

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It’s more of the breezy desert beach sound that so many El Paso bands proudly show off.  As winter comes to an end this is the perfect upbeat song to welcome back the sunny days and warmer temperature.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Surfing on sand dunes and a never ending road trip through a bright, happy desert landscape.  They need to make a desert surfing video now!

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  Medved is the Russian word for ‘bear’ and medvedi would be like a cute little bear.

BONUS KHALID SONG FEATURING A GUY THAT WEARS A GIANT MARSHMALLOW HELMET – “Silence” by Marshmello with Khalid

PRODUCT OF:  Philadelphia & El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  KHALID!  Marshmello has worked with some of the best artists in the world and he has created his best collaboration with Khalid on “Silence”.  If you ever wondered what Khalid’s smooth sound would sound like if it was a bit more upbeat, then now you have your answer.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Hip kids on bicycles turn an abandoned part of town into a wonderland of neon lights and fluorescent paint.  Marshmello is the Pied Piper of hip youth that ride bicycles.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  Marshmallows used to be made with the marshmallow plant, but now they are all practically just made out of sugar.
