SIMPLE MINDED 8-TRACK MIX TAPE – 3rd Quarter 2017

Once again, here is the Simple Minded 8-Track Mix Tape. So here's our top musical picks for the 3rd quarter of 2017 - July, August and September.

THIRD QUARTER 2017 – July, August & September

TRACK 1 – “The Last Letter” by The Deep Shadows from the album The Deep Shadows

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It’s a funky trip with a psychedelic tinge that conjures up the spirit of “lovemakin” tunes of the ‘70s.  Come for the smooth grooves but stay for the exotic guitar solo that would make Bombino proud.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A room with shag carpeting on the floor, walls and roof with a giant sexy bed as tons of sexy ladies are seduced by the sexiness of The Deep Shadows.  Also, there would be black light posters.  Lots and lots of black light posters and black lights.  Please, someone make this video.

TRACK 2 – “Les Belles” by Isolde from the album Cartes Postales

PRODUCT OF:  Ghent, Belgium

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It is like the theme song for a kick ass ‘60s French spy movie that was somehow plucked out of time and landed in the hands of the amazing Isolde.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Isolde chilling and dancing in the ultra-sleek lounge of a spaceship while she thinks about a weirdo dance rehearsal.

TRACK 3 – “The Study On Falling” by Asaf Avidan from the album The Study On Falling

PRODUCT OF:  Jerusalem, Israel

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  Asaf Avidan’s hauntingly beautiful voice returns in a track that explores new ground with a country music vibe.  The track is a somber love song with tinges of hope and regret.  It’s always a pleasure to have new music from Asaf Avidan.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Beautiful naked girls defying gravity and floating in the air tied up in brightly colored ropes and ornate knots.  The beautiful single cover should be interpreted as a video immediately.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG AND/OR ARTIST THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  The cover for the single for this track features a beautiful painting of a redhead tied up in Kinbaku style rope bondage but the illustration is inverted and it appears she is floating up – thus “the study on falling”.  Kinbaku is the Japanese style of bondage that involves tying people up in elaborate, visually stunning knot patterns.

TRACK 4 – “Young Dumb & Broke” by Khalid from the album American Teen

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  You can’t go wrong with Khalid and his upbeat R&B sound.  His smooth voice melts perfectly with the mellow tune to create an auditory pillow that caresses your head on its musical dreamscape journey.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A nostalgic romp through high school filled with cameos from a ton of high school-centric movies and shows from years gone by.

TRACK 5 – “Everytime” by The Genders from the album Mourning Heartbeats

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It combines the hard crunching music of indie rock with a neo glam rock splash that creates a unique alternative rock experience.  It’s a song that sounds fresh and old school all at the same time.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A futuristic motorcycle race that ends at a T-Rex show ……. IN 1971!  They were going so fast they went back in time, like The Flash!  Unfortunately, no video exists for this song and there is no motorcycle race.

TRACK 6 – “Moonlight” by Grace VanderWaal from the album Just the Beginning

PRODUCT OF:  Suffern, New York

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  You can never have too many kick ass ukulele-centric songs.  As Grace VanderWaal gets older, so too her music gets more complicated and mature – but her music still has an edge of bright eyed innocence that makes her music such a unique treat compared to all the other stuff on the charts.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Grace VanderWaal wandering around the city and coming home to play an impromptu concert on the roof of her apartment building.  I assume that Grace does this a lot considering the large crowd at the show.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG AND/OR ARTIST THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  This song is not based on the movie Moonlight that won best picture at the Academy Awards.  I’m not sure that Grace would write a song about the rise of gay gang members and their conflicted criminal enterprises.

TRACK 7 – “Boy to Beastie” by The Van Jets from the album Future Primitives

PRODUCT OF:  Belgium

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It masterfully combines rock music, electronica and a horror movie style soundtrack into an amazingly catchy electro rock song.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  The Wolfman, Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon throwing a party at a haunted castle filled with booze and sexy ladies.  God willing, they make the video for this song soon.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG AND/OR ARTIST THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  In the video game Altered Beast a man turns into a “beastie” with the help of Zeus in order to rescue Athena in Ancient Greece.  It sounds absurd but it’s actually pretty cool.

TRACK 8 – “Sleep Talk” by Memoria from the album Lucid

PRODUCT OF:  El Paso

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  It has the airy desert beach rock sound that is found in many El Paso bands but also has a nice pop punk vibe that just makes the song very infectious.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  Our heroes surfing in the desert to reach a magical sandcastle in order to rescue a princess.  No video exists for the song but one can dream.

BONUS HANNAH MONTANA COMEBACK SONG – “Younger Now” by Miley Cyrus from the album Younger Now

PRODUCT OF:  Los Angeles

THIS SONG KICKS ASS BECAUSE:  Miley Cyrus is back with a happier pop sound that doesn’t shamelessly revert back to sexualized lyrics and flavor of the week hip hop tripe as she has done in the past.  I find Miley Cyrus very likable and I will unashamedly listen to her music every time she comes up with something new.

IF I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE:  A pastel wonderland filled with puppets, parades, Americana and poodle skirts.

WANT TO READ A FANTASTIC FACT RELATING TO THE SONG AND/OR ARTIST THAT WE PROBABLY JUST MADE UP?  DID YOU KNOW:  This is the first time in years that Miley Cyrus has made a music video where she doesn’t get completely naked and prance around.
